Hugging a police officer is the same as assaulting a police officer
This particular incident happened in Iowa, and I'm not sure if it was provocative, but I have mixed feelings on this particular case. A man named Luke Schreder said he just 'felt like the cop needed a huge', so he hugged an Iowa State police officer.
Luke was promptly arrested by the officer he hugged, and he was charged with assaulting a peace officer. And as is usually the case, Luke also had a few other charges added into the initial charge, including public intoxication and interference with official acts. It seems pretty ridiculous that somebody could be arrested for such a loving act, but there's a few things you have to remember.
Being a police officer is not an easy job, and you have to deal with wackos and nut cases every day. And it's legally never okay to even touch a police officer while they are on duty, even a handshake or a pat on the shoulder could be turned into an assault charge. And it's understandable how somebody coming at you with both arms could be considered a provocative act. But to arrested and charge this person after you know he's not trying to harm you is pushing your bounds a little bit.
