Pakistani President is being sanctioned for flirting with Sarah Palin

In last week's Saturday Night Live where Tina Fey was again doing a great job impersonating Sarah Palin, it seems that skit was based more on fact than fiction. She 'jokingly' said he 'literally embracing me'. Well now that President Asif Ali Zardari is back in Pakisatan, he's been slapped with a fatwa.

A Pakistani cleric, Maulana Abdul Ghafar, issued the fatwa against President Zardari for 'un-Islamic flirting with Sarah Palin' during his visit to New York last week. When they met, President Zardari told Palin 'You're gorgeous' during their extended photo-op handshake.He then told her, 'if your aides insist, I might hug you'. Apparently that is crossing the line in the Islamic world.

Jonathan Turley notes an interesting point as well. This type of thing never happened with Madeleine Albright or Margaret Thatcher. Zardari clearly needs to get out more, but he may want to avoid Lal Masjid mosque.

We, as a civilized western country can only hope nothing comes of this. But it is important to point out how un-willing some countries will be to have a female leader they might be required to meet with. Even though President Zardari was flirting, that is no reason to want him out of office.
